Hedges Family Estate DLD Syrah 2012, Les Grosses Vineyard, Red Mountain, WA
Smelled blind, I would guess this is a Northern Rhône Syrah, with its distinct steel and gunflint quality, saddle leather, venison bacon, and savoriness mingling with almost floral black peppercorn. On the palate, these savory notes are joined by sweetly spiced blackberry conserve, melted fig, and a hint of black licorice. It’s a stunner, and shows all the potential of Red Mountain Syrah. Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain 2011
Lovely Bordeaux-style aromatics, with tobacco, cigar humidor, and well-calibrated spice couched in sweet cedar, a hint of cassis, and red licorice. These turn to flavors of blackberry, black currants, mineral, star anise, and sweet spice, all finishing with a bit of the savoriness of leather and charred sage. Excellent. Drink now - 2020+.
